We are always looking for experienced volunteers to assist GSRV by conducting behavioural and health assessments, and by transporting our rescue dogs to vet appointments, foster carers and forever homes.
We are grateful for contributions made as we could not do what we do without the generosity of our volunteers.
Assessments and transporting
GSRV see the safety of our volunteers as paramount. We will never knowingly put anyone in an unsafe environment however we do not always know the complete background of our dogs. This is why we need to ensure that we ask for volunteers with experience.
German Shepherds have needs that are unique to the breed and an experienced person is able to more accurately predict the behaviour of a particular animal and therefore keep themselves and the dog feeling comfortable and safe. For roles of dog assessment and/or dog transportation, we need volunteers with specific skills:
- A license and a reliable, insured and appropriate vehicle to transport German Shepherd Dogs.
- Experience with the breed and a good understanding of the general behavior of a German Shepherd – ideally including an understanding of the many behaviours associated with anxiety and fear reactions.
- Confidence and experience in introducing dogs to new environments and other animals.
- An ability to commit to regular involvement (planned and last minute) and remain active in you volunteer role.
If you think this is a way you would like to help, please complete the volunteer application. GSRV will commit to getting back to you within a week of receiving your application, with the next steps.
If you feel that either now is not the right time for you to volunteer with us or that you do not meet the needs above, we would like to sincerely thank you for taking the time to read about volunteering with GSRV.
